How to ease anxiety about being in front of a camera

The fear of being in front of the camera is often the number one barrier to booking a session with your favorite photographer. I hear it all the time… “I’m not good in front of a camera”, “I’m not photogenic”, “I hate how I look in photos”. The words vary but the message is always the same.

A lot of us have a deficit in confidence. We mistake self-love for conceit, confidence for arrogance. We treat a portrait session as a vanity session.

A portrait session with the right photographer is a chance to capture on camera your true essence. It is not saying “look how much better I am than everyone else”, it’s “this is ME. This is who I am and how I express myself and that is worth celebrating”.

People are often afraid of taking up too much space. But there is enough space for everyone, and you deserve to be celebrated and feel beautiful just as much as every other client I have had.

  1. Choose a photographer that you feel like you could be yourself around. The right photographer will bring you out of your shell and allow your unique self to shine in front of the camera (all you have to do is trust them!)

  2. Don’t pick out your clothing based on what you think people want to see. Pick out clothes that make you feel most like yourself. Wearing clothes that really feel like us boosts confidence significantly. This confidence shines in front of the camera

  3. Be honest with your photographer about insecurities as well as parts of yourself you love. Your photographer is a professional at making people feel beautiful and celebrated; they will know how to work with you to ease insecurities and elevate your confidence.
